Personality: Varian is introduced to us as a "wizard", but very quickly corrects this by saying that he is an alchemist, actually. Science is his passion. Inventions, research, all that. So it's no surprise that he's incredibly inquisitive, constantly wanting to analyze and investigate anything unusual he comes across. His passion for this is so great, it can cause him to disregard the actual danger involved, far too distracted by how fascinating he finds it. Even when an automaton almost kills him, all he can think about is how impressive the science of it all is. Not the best sense of self preservation, perhaps, but you can't say he isn't enthusiastic. He just has just as much recklessness to match.
This recklessness goes for his own experiments too, of course, and he does tend to get... carried away. Sometimes putting people in danger because he didn't think his ideas through. He means well, he can just... be a little much, sometimes. Not helping the fact is that he can be a little distracted and clumsy, so. All in all kind of a dangerous mix of traits for such a brilliant kid. And he really is brilliant. He's the only person who managed to figure out how to translate ancient texts all by himself, he got closer to figuring out how the Sundrop and the black rocks worked... Which isn't even getting to his alchemical skills. So, suffice to say, sometimes he's a little too smart for his own good.
Though his intentions, at least initially, are good! All that Varian really wants is to help people. He's very eager to please, happily helping anyone who asks him. While, yes, he almost blows up his entire town at some point (again...), all he wanted to do was surprise the village with hot running water. He's also a pretty understanding kid... most of the time. When Cassandra pretty much outright ditches him, despite her promise to him, he's pretty quick to forgive her. Understanding that she was trying to impress her dad... He can relate. After all, Varian is constantly looking for approval. From his father, his crush, his friends, random strangers at a science expo. Really just anyone around him. He wants to be acknowledged. Listened to.
And he has... issues, with that. Because very often Varian isn't listened to. He gets dismissed by his father most of all, with his opinion on the worsening situation in Old Corona pretty much being completely brushed off. Though that's far from the only time. Varian has a lot of trouble getting people to listen to him. So eventually, when his life goes to hell, he ends up fixating on that, feeling like he has to force people to listen to him now... whether they want to or not.
Varian's a sweet kid, really he is. He's genuinely nice and really does mean well. He just also turns very resentful. The kid can really hold a grudge, as it turns out, when he feels betrayed. When that happens, his more ruthless side comes out. When Varian wants something and he doesn't feel as if he really has anyone on his side, he'll go to any lengths to just take it himself. And past a certain point in canon, he genuinely doesn't think there's anyone he can trust... Considering there's a very real pattern of adults straight up lying to him or betraying his trust - sometimes for very valid reasons, absolutely, but it's more about the pattern here - it's hard to blame him. So when he's like that, he's not above lying, stealing, hostage taking, or straight up violence. He turns his own pet raccoon into a monster just to distract Corona while he kidnaps the queen. And, well. As he says in one of his own songs... anyone who stands in his way? He'll make them pay. You know, how you do at age fourteen? Varian's way of dealing with complicated negative emotions is just... to lash out.
Still, at his core, Varian is just a dorky kid. A dorky kid with issues and a lot of anger, absolutely. But he's also still the kid who gets awkward around his crush and thinks Flynn Rider is just the coolest and decides to just adopt the raccoon that keeps breaking into his house. All he really wants, end of the day, is to have his dad be proud of him. Not exactly a very evil motivation, even when he does end up going a little off the rails. Seriously, though, he is a dork to the extreme. He gets stupidly excited about things like going on a road trip with his dad or getting to help Cassandra do her work, because it means he gets to be her "co-lady in waiting". He's... a real nerd.
A dangerous nerd, when pushed, but still just a nerd.
Abilities:
≫ Alchemy: Varian's a talented alchemist. So he has a strong grasp of chemistry and chemical reactions, as well as knowing how to make all sorts of concoctions. Just for a few examples, he makes an instant-cleaning solution, a special chemical compound of pink slime that (safely) sticks people in place, and even some sort of elixir that turns a cute little raccoon into a vicious monster... temporarily. Though this is, of course, dependant on him having the proper ingredients and lab to actually make anything impressive. He's sort of lacking the latter, here.
≫ Engineering: Varian is a pretty damn good tinkerer, as it turns out. He's good at putting stuff together. He even manages to reverse-engineer a whole bunch of ancient killer automatons to do his bidding. Again, dependant on tools, components, all that stuff. You can't make a robot out of sand, like. Yeah.
≫ All the powers of a fourteen year old boy! Varian can lift anything you might imagine a scrawny kid to lift. He's easily taken out by like, anything, really. He can... uh... what powers do puberty give you, the ability to make bad choices and not know how to deal with emotions? Fear him.
≫ Ruddiger: Varian comes with his raccoon pet Ruddiger. It's. It's just a raccoon. Like a regular animal, just a very smart one. He's good at climbing and that's about it for special powers.
